American literature - a favor (OT - sorry...)

Sorry, this is OT but as you know I'm studying for my exams and since I'm gonna (I hope) study English Philology, I need to know some stuff about American literature as well for my exams. So can anyone please give me the names of the most famous American writers (novelists and poets), especially from the 20th century, so that later I can find more information about them. I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a few names.
