Rib-tickling redemption
Come out and see how a well-organized music and food festival looks
Saturday, September 09, 2006
If you're hungry for a music and food festival you can actually plan on, and a headliner who is actually scheduled in advance, look no
further than the Rockin' Rib and Music Fest Sept. 22-23 downtown.
Country music superstar Martina McBride will be performing for the Rockin' Rib Fest at the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame on Reynolds Street
Saturday night Sept. 23 - and a dozen local bands will be playing at the Augusta Common that Friday evening and Saturday during the day.
Did we mention the ribs?
There will be some 20 teams of rib masters to compete for judges and to sample their fare for attendees.
And if you backyard barbecuers have never been to a rib fest or barbecue contest before, it's worth it just to see what the major leagues look
like: These folks roll in some heavy equipment and take their craft very seriously.
"I've gotten calls from teams up in the Carolinas," says Mitzi Gillispie, manager of Famous Dave's Barbecue and the rib-team coordinator.
"We've got some serious barbecue people coming into town."
There will also be a kid's zone, a motorcycle show, a wine tasting, arts and crafts, other food and drinks and more.
And, oh yes, Martina McBride - one of the biggest country stars ever to come to Augusta, and a real coup for Rockin' Rib Fest founder
Tom Clark, manager of Fatz Cafe.
At the inaugural Rockin' Rib Fest last year, Clark brought in the Charlie Daniels Band.
This guy's on a roll.
He's also on a mission: The Rockin' Rib and Music Fest is a fund-raiser for the Jenny Clark Scholarship Fund and the National Network to
End Domestic Violence. The scholarship fund, in memory of Clark's daughter, rewards area student athletes for exemplary character.
The event also could be seen as a shot at redemption for Augusta, after the poorly planned and executed festival to honor James Brown last
May. In contrast, the Rockin' Rib and Music Fest has all the marks of a first-rate event - and next year could be even better, when it
becomes sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, meaning that an even bigger army of barbecuing teams will descend on
Augusta.
As appetizers go, though, this year's Rockin' Rib and Music Fest hits the spot, especially with a main course the likes of Martina McBride.
Show them Augusta supports a first-class festival.
(Tickets for Martina McBride are $39 for general admission, $49 for premium admission; admission to Rib Fest and music at the Augusta
Common stage is $7, ages 11 and younger free. For tickets, call 877-725-8849. Tickets also available at Circle K and Fatz Cafe, and at
www.rockinrib.com).
