Martina makes time

Country superstar Martina McBride is winding up a lengthy tour in support of her latest album, Timeless, but she says she was glad to add a Phoenix date for an event benefiting five charities.

She'll headline a concert Saturday at US Airways Center that caps the sixth annual Beauty of a Bonzer. Hosted by Outback Steakhouse and Budweiser, the Bonzer (an Australian term for "large party") this year benefits the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, Special Olympics Arizona, the Alzheimer's Association, Human Energy Project and the Real Gift Foundation.

The mother of three daughters (Delaney, Emma and Ava), McBride also hosts an annual celebrity auction in Nashville benefiting the YWCA. This year, it raised more than $140,000.

McBride, 40, phoned from the home outside Nashville that she shares with her children and her husband and musical collaborator, John McBride.

Question: You must get scores of charity requests annually. Why did you sign on for Beauty of a Bonzer?

Answer: Usually you do an event and all the money goes to one charity. I love the fact that this goes to four or five different ones and that some of them have to do with children.

Q: You've recorded several hits with themes involving women, such as Independence Day and A Broken Wing. When you look into your concert crowds, do you feel a bond with female fans?

A: Definitely. I know there are a lot of women who relate to my songs and find strength or hope. That's really a cool thing, to be able to do that for somebody, and a testament to the power of music.

Q: The Timeless album celebrates some of country music's great female singers. Do you have a few favorites?

A: Reba McEntire has always been one of my biggest influences. I love her singing. . . . She's also a great businesswoman, very professional and hard working. And, of course, (the late) Tammy Wynette and Loretta Lynn are two of my favorites. I've been fortunate to spend some time with Loretta, and she inducted me into the Grand Ole Opry.

Q: You've been nominated again as best female vocalist in the upcoming Country Music Association Awards. How do you keep things in perspective?

A: Raising three children is a big thing to focus on, so it keeps you grounded. A lot of it is how I was raised - your upbringing, humility, work ethic, values and morals. I'm really grateful that I had a good, strong upbringing.

Q: You tour only on weekends during the school year. Do you try to be a "normal" mom whenever you can?

A: It's really excruciatingly normal. (Laughs) I think if people peeked in, they'd think, "Well, this is odd. She's cooking supper, doing her laundry, going to the grocery store and picking up the kids at school." And in between all that, I go to the studio and make a record and sing for 10,000 people a night. It's pretty awesome.

Q: You've successfully walked the line between traditional and modern sounds on your nine albums. How do you manage that?

A: I don't know that I consciously think about it. I just try to produce a song in a way that's best for the song and where I am style-wise at the time. You have a lot of freedom in country music.

Q: What do you have planned for Saturday's Bonzer show?

A: We won't be splitting the set and doing two complete shows, but we will have some of the (classic) Timeless material in the middle of the set.

Charitable Martina McBride performs at ‘Beauty of a Bonzer’
By Chris Hansen Orf, Tribune
September 10, 2006

Country singer Martina McBride is known for two things — her powerful voice, which has produced multiple Top 10 singles and has won her many female vocalist of the year awards from country music associations CMA and the ACM, and her many charitable efforts.

As one of the biggest stars in her field, McBride is probably continually asked to lend her voice to benefit concerts for charitable causes, but when she was approached to perform at “Beauty of a Bonzer” on Saturday at US Airways Arena, she knew it was something she wanted to do.

“This is a special event because it does benefit five different charities,” McBride says. “It’s for children, and of course everybody has been affected in some way by Alzheimer’s, so the chance to do a show for that many charities was important to me.”

A “bonzer” is what Australians call a big party, and this event was created by Matt McMahon, a partner of Outback Steakhouse restaurants. It will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association, Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, Special Olympics Arizona, The Real Gift Foundation and The Human Energy Project.

The charities have sold tables to donors on the floor of the arena, the Martina McBride concert culminates a day that features a silent auction and dinner.

General admission tickets in the bowl of the arena for the concert can be purchased for $30 to $75.

McBride’s charity work is considerable. She is the spokeswoman for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and the video for her hit “Concrete Angel,” a song about an abused little girl, contained information for ChildHelp USA. McBride pledged a portion of sales from her “Greatest Hits” CD to the American Red Cross after Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She was the winner of the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award in 2003 and the Heroes Award in 2003.

McBride’s last album, “Timeless,” was one of the best country records of 2005; a collection of classic country songs written by such great songwriters as Hank Williams, Harlan Howard and Merle Haggard. It introduced a younger, contemporary country audience to some of the best songs in the history of the genre.

“It was something I’d always wanted to do,” McBride says of making the album, her first as sole producer on one of her albums. “I grew up singing those songs and watching my dad (a musician who fronted a band called The Schifters) play them, so it was an album I’d always wanted to make.”

Later this year McBride will go on her fourth Joy of Christmas tour, on which she’ll sing holiday songs from her 1999 disc, “White Christmas.”

“It’s a show for the whole family,” McBride says. “And it’s fun for me because my family (her husband, John, who runs sound at all of McBride’s concerts, and their three children, the youngest of which is 14 months) will be along, too.”

In addition to her charitable work and holiday tour, McBride is putting together a new album, which may or may not be ready for release in 2007. “I hope so!” she laughs.

Martina McBride: We're all the same inside is such an important lyric to me. Every night that I sing it live, I want people to feel that. I’m really no different. I just have a great job, and I get to wear cool clothes, and I was given a gift. When it comes down to it, we are all just trying to do our thing, trying to make the world a better place in our way.
