While watching Martina's videos earlier today (at cmt.com), I was reminded of the Martinaviller (Claude, IIRC) who wondered why oh why there were no Patsy Cline songs on Timeless.

Well, now it's my turn: Why Oh Why is Cry on the Shoulder of the Road not on the Greatest Hits album. OK, so maybe I'm five years late, and OK so maybe all the others were "greatest-er" hits, but my goodness, this is one terrific song! I forgot just how good it is and how good that video is. Love it! Love it. Love it.

Anyone have any ideas or opinions on why it was left out? GH has 14 hits and 4 new songs. Surely they could have squeezed another in there.

Any while I'm asking questions, try this: If you can take your eyes off Martina getting into that '57 Chevy for a minute, take a look around at the beautiful countryside. Any ideas where this was filmed?

Cordially,
Tom

Unfortunately, the term HITS is the key here. If it was a "Best of" it would be up to opinion-possibly the artists' or the record companies.

But the fact is, it wasn't a big hit. I'm not saying anything against it because I personally LOVE the song. And if I were personally creating my OWN M collection in a single disc, it would DEFINATELY make it! In fact, I would have it on there before a lot of other songs, including Strangers. (Actually, Strangers is the one song that DIS-proves my theory. It was not only not a hit, it wasn't even a single. But it was toyed as an idea for a single off the GH.)

It's My Time was a bigger hit than that and it didn't make it either.

That's definitely one of my favorite songs and the video just kills me every time I watch it!!! I love it!!!

As for why it wasn't on the GH CD, the reason is probably that it didn't do that well on the charts and wasn't a "great hit" biggrin.gifAlthough there might have been different reasons why the song wasn't put there. After all, Strangers is there and it wasn't even a single.

I don't remember where the video was shot, but I crack up every time Martina tells a story of how she wanted to shoot the video in the desert, because they wanted to shoot it outside and she thought it was gonna be warmer than Nashville (it was around September/October)... LOL They ended up with basically no heating anywhere for 2 days with temperatures around 40 biggrin.gif

It's my favorite M song, so I was slightly dissapointed it wasn't on the GH album too! But, at the same time since I like things slightly more "obscure", it's kinda cool to say "Oh, my favorite Martina song is COTSOTR" and not everybody know what it is. laugh.gif

Yes, then every one identifies at us as the country cognoscenti. wink.gif

And in response to Ania, it looks to me as if it is shot in the California desert, say Mojave, Barstow, Palmdale area?

I don't remember where it was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't California. It was somewhere closer to Nashville, because it was only a 2-day shoot and since Martina doesn't fly, it would take longer just to get to CA, hehe biggrin.gifI think she mentioned in one of the interviews where the video was shot, but I can't remember which one it was...

I was thinking Arizona too, but I checked the Rewind interview, and she didn't mention it in that one, so I wasn't sure. Maybe it was in the Personal Playback interview biggrin.gifBut Arizona definitely seems like a location I've heard Martina mention somewhere... LOL But it can also be my imagination playing tricks on me, hehe biggrin.gif

Darn rolleyes.gifI came here intending to write a few words about last Saturday's show in Phoenix, when I see a thread about COTSOTR.

Plans out of the window biggrin.gifThis is my favourite M song and favourite video. MBLM got my attention, COTSOTR hooked me and reeled me in ohmy.gif

As for the location, wasn't there a sign saying xxx miles to Barstow? - unless they can insert that in the video later rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gifBut then again that could be a completely different video I'm thinking of unsure.gifThanks a lot ! now I have to watch all my videos again tongue.gif

Ross

p.s. Phoenix was fun.

Ross,
You were going to reply to this thread for sure!!!!!

Just want to add, that Cry on the shoulder on the road is a favorite of mine too. It would be a great addition to that Medley(what? what medley???), that i suggested to Martina at Martinafest.

It was filmed in Arizona for sure, don t know the exact location. I remember Martina saying that it was very cold when they filmed(I heard on some tv show i watched, have it somewhere on videotape as usual....)

It was filmed in California. Probably out in the Mojave or one of the other desert regions. It gets very hot there and very cold there depending on time of day and the time of year.

"The Time Has Come" was filmed in Arizona.

I went back and watched again, and despite the mention of Bakersfield in the lyrics, it appears that the "Truck Stop" sign has some words above and below that look like it might be "Arizona"something, can't make it out on the small screen.

But I also have to point out something that I can't help but notice, it's so adorable. There are at least two instances where the camera holds on Martina as she finishes singing a verse. She is looking straight into the camera, but then out of self-consciousness I guess, she averts her eyes and cracks a little grin at the last minute.

So cute. Check it out again. It's worth the trip over to cmt.com

(Reminds me of Faith in her Secret of Life video where she does the same thing.)

One more thing: Martina has so many videos where she is absolutely beautiful, but does anyone else think that she is looks particularly pretty in COTSOTR? How old was she when this was made? Maybe 29?

Cordially,

Tom

I haven't found the info yet of exactly where in Arizona the video was filmed, but I did find some other things - it's fun looking through the "old" stuff.

From the Winter/Spring 1997 fan club newsletter, Liz Beavers (former MMFC Prez) says: "...And don't you love the video? I'm so glad Martina doesn't buy into the cheesy videos that some of the artists make." Amen, Liz!

From the same newsleter, from Martina: ""Cry on the Shoulder of the Road" is doing really well too. It's at #31 (R&R)/#39(Billboard) on the charts this week (2/24). Have you seen the video? It was 28 degrees when we were shooting that! Be sure and call and request the song and the video when you can!"

And from a postcard I received in the mail: "As a fan of Martina's we are asking everyone to call in & request her new song "Cry on the Shoulder of the Road". You can also request the video on C.M.T. ... This helps her climb up the charts. She is working on a new & exciting album. Thanks for helping Martina. Jeanne Schiff"

I think she's very pretty in the video! 1996-1966 is 30. biggrin.gif
