MCBRIDE'S MASSIVE VOICE EXPLODES THROUGH THE I WIRELESS CENTER

By Ashley Tarr

Moline- when the cd being promoted is called "Waking Up Laughing," it should be a clue that the singer isn't afraid of showing emotions.

Martina Mcbride is an explosion on stage, and with the cameras trained on her entire performance at the i wireless center Saturday night, she seemed to reach volcanic proportions.

The arena was nearly sold out, with only a few of the cheap seats up top remaining open. The fans were riled up, with signs, buttons and flowers ready. One girl had a hole for her head cut into the sign reading "Martina makes me a 'Happy Girl.' 'That's how I Feel."

It was a great party-vibe atmosphere that carried through the entire evening.

"Are you lookin' pretty?" WLLR'S JD Justice yelled out to the crowd. "You could be on TV."

The crowd roared out approval at the reminder that the concert was being filmed for a March 2008 edition of Great Performances on PBS.

The hilarious and super-cute Warren Brothers kicked off the action, getting the audiance going with a "Sell A lot of beer" and "If You're Reading This," a Tim Mcgraw hit they helped pen.

"We figured out how to get a huge hit -- have Martina sing it, "quipped Brett Warren, refering to her CMA song of the year-nominated "Anyway."

And when it was Martina's turn to take the stage, she entered dressed head-to-toe back, as "Anyway" started playing solomnly.

She then turned the mood right around with "When god Fearin' Women Get The Blues," Which had practically every women in the arena stomping her feet.

While going through all of the hits, like "How I feel," "Love's The Only House" and "This One's For The Girls," she also kept to her country roots by working in Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden" and Loretta Lynn's "You Aint Woman Enough (to Take My Man)."

But the striking thing is how those monster vocals came out of the itty-bitty body. I've always maintained that Martina has the best voice in country music, able to blow away any Faith or Shania. But i never realized it was that good.

And even after two hours, the power of her voice was undiminished. Any normal human being would have passed out after some of those crowd-raising, sustained notes that seemingly lasted forever in "Where Would You Be," but she just turned around and did it again for "Brocken Wing". It was simmply awesome to watch.

"That may have been the loudest thing I ever heard," she said, clearly getting chocked up. "Stop it. You're gonna make me cry."

The woman is a country legend, and she's only bound to get better with time. She really sets the tone, wether it's creating a sea of arms waving or pushing everyone to tears for "Concrete Angel."

While I figured it was going to be an uber girl fest, the audiance crossed both genders and all age groups, with everyone on their feet. She even came back for an encore, giving Steve Perry a run for his money by nailing "Don't Stop Believin" and belting out a great cover of Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot."

"I definitely picked the right place," she said, referring to the television special. And the crowd's response showed they thought the same thing.

How great is that!! Hope everyone enjoyed it smile.gif!!
