Full Version: Because Of You

I just heard Reba's "Because of You" duet with Kelly Clarkson, and as much as I hate to say it, I'm not a fan. It's too something. I can't really put my finger on it. The instrumentals are pretty (but maybe a bit sedate and boring) and I think Reba and Kelly have great harmony, but...it's Kelly's song, and I think that it will always be that way to a lot of people.

I know country covers of non-country songs has been done before (God Must Have Spent, I Don't Want to Miss a Thing, Lips of an Angel, etc.) and by and large, I always enjoy the non-country version much more. That's saying a lot coming from a country loving girl such as myself.
Forrester_777
It's very...."different" I found laugh.gif

I don't hate it...but it's far from favourite duet.
Chicadeny116
I agree. The vocals were good but the arrangement wasn't very good to me. I didn't like it as a country song.
katenigma
I'm not crazy about it, either. Slowing it down like that has made it too... schmaltzy, I guess is a way to describe it, even though that doesn't quite fit. They could have left some of the edge on it, and still had it be "country."

I agree. It just didn't fit well. HOWEVER, Reba blew Kelly OUT OF THE WATER!!! Her voice has always been great anyway, but I thought she sounded great on that song while Kelly was off, which is weird to me because it's her song!! It almost sounded like it wasn't rehearsed or something. Too bad, cause they can both sing and it could have been fantastic if John McBride did the sound on it!! LOL

Okay, let's not get into another "bashing non-country performers" thing just because this is a country board. Reba and Kelly are both amazing performers with strong voices, and I'm tired of seeing musicians from other genres get belittled on this board just because they're not country.

I've heard the song a few times over the last few days and thought both of them sounded terrific. However, it just seems odd hearing Reba sing this song because it just seems more appropriate for a younger woman to be singing it rather than an older woman, know what I mean? Plus, Reba's got that twang in her voice (which I love, don't get me wrong). Perhaps they should have just collaborated on a brand new song instead of trying to countryize a pop/rock song.

Now see, I love the song, but I love Reba and I would shock myself if I said I hated it. I love Kelly too, I think this is going to be a #1 and I think it could win an award! Who knows, maybe a Grammy?!

What's funny is that I loved Reba and Kelly's duet of "Does He Love You" even though I am also a fan of Reba/Linda Davis.

I agree with this. I don't think it's just "countryizing" a pop/rock song, but also "popping" or "rocking" up a country song (although that happens less often). But a collaboration on a new song...I could see that being great!

I also love the song. I admit that I was a little surprised that they did a song that was originally on Kelly's album. I do like Kelly's version, but now I love the duet. I hope that it does well on the charts. Reba is one of those artists that has been here for a long time and can still keep the fans interested. I am curious to see what the rest of the album will be like.
teamgal20
Love the song, didnt enjoy Reba singing it. Oh well. She sounds good in every other song. Rock music is not her forte!

Yah, I have ta say, when I heard it on ACMs, I was unimpressed.
Wanted it to be better than it was.. I really did, cause I love the song and both Reba and Kelly, and even Reba and Kelly together, but this one just kinda fell flat.

Cordially,

Tom
Derek
Like the song.. like Reba and I like Kelly lol
Laura
I thought it was AWFUL! ph34r.gif

I absolutely love it, and if you listen to the studio version online, it sounds even stronger and even better than the live performance did. They would not have done this song unless they both felt really good about it, and I think they sound great together and love what they came up with for it! I've been listening to it over and over and love it more and more the more I listen! It had a strong Billboard debut of #42 and have no doubt that it will continue to climb.
martinafan100
I liked Reba's take on it... however it is not my favorite Reba duet... I prefer "Does He Love You" better and her "On My Own" collaboration with Martina, Trisha and Linda.

I finally heard the album version tonight and I do like it better than the live version.
StillBeMe16
I am a big Kelly and Reba fan, and I thought it was really cool that Reba loved the song so much she wanted to record it. They were supposed to do a brand new duet and it was called "Alot Like You". It was supposed to go on Reba's CD. But, Reba was really really touched by Because of You and asked Kelly if they could re-record that one instead.

I absolutely adore Kelly's original version (it's one of my favorites of hers), but I really enjoy the duet as well. I think they harmonize beautifully and it's definitely different hearing Reba sing it, but I think a good different smile.gifI'm definitely looking forward to hearing it on the radio biggrin.gif
Remy266
I didn't know that Reba asked to record that one over a new song. Interesting. I've heard it several times on XM Radio in the last week.
Tobias2343
Yeah, as StillBeMe16 said, they had already recorded a new song, but "Because of You" was so moving to Reba and it was so well-received by the crowd at the taping of Crossroads that Reba asked Kelly if they could record it instead. I also heard that Kelly was really enthusiastic about the idea herself...who wouldn't be? I mean, if your idol is so touched by a song you wrote that she asks you to re-record it as a duet with you on board, would you honestly say no? That, I think, is one of the highest honors. I also heard that Kelly really loved how Reba told the story of the song, and I agree, it's a very moving song and Reba has always been a great storyteller through the songs she sings, so it's a natural fit. As far as I know, by the way, isn't this a first? I mean, people do covers of songs all the time, but I can't think of anyone who has ever done a cover of a song remade as a duet with the original artist whose song you're covering. I think it's really cool and I love both versions of the song.
Remy266
I'm sure it's happened before. There's the new(ish) "Missing You" with Allison Krauss and John Waite, and I know there's been others over the years, I just can't recall them at the moment.
thelasttoknow728
Hmm, that's really interesting. Maybe I should give it another listen...
StillBeMe16
Remy, that's cool you've heard it on XM radio! We have it in one of our cars and I was wondering if they were playing it! Hopefully I'll catch it on there too, that's awesome! biggrin.gif

Tobias~You can call me Michelle if you want smile.gifYeah, I think it's such an honor for Kelly to have her idol apporach her and be so moved by a song that Kelly wrote herself at the age of 16. There's such a strong mutual admiration and respect for one another and I think they're just so awesome together. I can't wait to see a video for this smile.gifI think they're going to be working on putting it together soon.
Bradley
Song was OK...I thought Reba and Kelly had a different song completely...Thats why I was shocked...Did anyone else hear same thing about a different song?
StillBeMe16
Bradley, they did record a completely new duet "Alot Like You". But Reba loved Kelly's song so much she wanted to do that one instead for the CD.
Reluctant Daughter
It's... okay. I love both Reba and Kelly (even them together), but this just isn't great. I do have to say that I love during the bridge ("I watched you die, I heard you cry every night in your sleep..."), Kelly doing the underground vocals is VERY cool. But for me, this will just always be Kelly's song. Knowing why she wrote it and all that... it's just... I can't have someone else singing it. tongue.gif
Tobias2343
And I'm so glad they did!!!!! I love the new duet version of "Because of You" and can totally understand why they wanted it to be on the album and the first single.

Although I hope that maybe at some point we'll get to hear "A Lot Like You." Maybe it will be saved for a future album? Or maybe a bonus track on the duets album, like for a Target or Wal-Mart "exclusive edition"?
Rossum1889
Reba is now performing it on her summer tour, she does a solo version of it and suppsedly it is incredible and people who went to the show last night said it was a lot better than the ACM performace. There is a short clip from the concert on YouTube: Because of You - Reba only
StillBeMe16
That's cool, I was wondering if Reba would perform it. I look forward to hearing it when I see her for the first time end of June!! My friends and I are so excited. I'm so glad I finally kick off my summer concerts next week with Martina biggrin.gif
