INFOLIST & MMID FAQ's
1. What are INFOLIST & MMID?
MMID (Martina McBride Internet Digest) and INFOLIST are the automated e-mail lists of Martina McBride's official Web site. They are a great source of information for fans who want to keep up with the latest about our favorite country singer. Best of all, the price is right; they're FREE.
INFOLIST and MMID are separate lists and each has a distinct purpose:
INFOLIST is an information-only mailing list that provides tour schedules, chart performance of Martina's music, TV & radio appearances, release dates, select concert reviews, etc. Posts are made to INFOLIST only by the staffs at martina-mcbride.com and Martina's fan club. If you're looking "official" information about Martina with minimal number of posts, INFOLIST is for you.
MMID is a separate mailing list for fans who want to trade information and comments about Martina and her music. Anyone who subscribes to MMID can post a message to everyone else on the list. This can result in a heavy volume of messages at times. (This is the main reason INFOLIST, with its restricted posts, was created.)
If you are only going to subscribe to one of the lists, it should be INFOLIST or you'll miss the announcements.
Both lists are automated by a program (robot) called Majordomo. Any e-mail sent to the posting address is automatically re-sent by Majordomo to everyone who has subscribed to the list. The list owner is Darren O'Neill, who is also Webmaster at Martina's Official Web site.
Note: Although MMID is called a "digest" (ie. all of the messages for a day are combined and mailed as one document), the digest format is not currently available. The martina-mcbride.com host - Addy.com - has had problems getting the digest format set up; at this time they seem to have put it on the back burner.
****************************************************************************
2. How can I subscribe?
Send e-mail to: [email protected]. The subject line is ignored. In the body of the message put:
subscribe infolist
subscribe mmid
You can combine both commands in one message if you want to subscribe to both lists, or send either line individually, depending on what you want to subscribe to.
If you have more than one e-mail address, you must post messages to MMID from the address that is subscribed. Majordomo will reject messages from non-subscribed addresses.
****************************************************************************
3. What can be posted to MMID?
Subscribers can post any stories or information about Martina that other fans would be interested in. Please keep things on a friendly level. Insults, flames, foul language, harassment and trolling are not acceptable. If you're into that, this list isn't for you. If you're behavior is unacceptable, you will be banned from the list.
Post messages in "plain text" rather than HTML (fancy text), since not everyone uses an e-mail program that can handle HTML. Outlook Express is the most common HTML culprit since it installs with HTML as the default setting.
Quite a few people quit the list because of excessive "junk" postings. These can fill up people's mailboxes in a hurry, especially if they belong to several mailing lists. Before you post, ask yourself whether this message would be of real interest to EVERYONE on the list. Avoid postings that merely say things like "Me too" or "I saw Martina last night and she's awesome", or "Martina RULES" (we already know that :-). If you have several things to say, combine them in one message rather than separate postings.
DO NOT USE MMID TO SEND A MESSAGE OR REPLY TO ONE PERSON; SEND IT DIRECTLY TO THEIR E-MAIL ADDRESS. If you want to send a message to one person or reply to one person concerning an MMID post, use that person's e-mail address rather than MMID's address. When you hit "Reply" to a posting, the message is automatically addressed to the person who sent the message. If you really think it's important for everyone to see it, put MMID's address in the "TO" line.
Do not attach photos to MMID postings. If you have pictures of Martina (including Martina with yourself) and want to share them with everyone, either attach them to e-mail and send to: [email protected] so Darren will put them on the Web site photo pages;
Or, put them on your own Web page and post a message to MMID telling everyone where to look for them. If you don't have access to a scanner, snailmail your pix to:
Darren O'Neill
PO Box 627
Mokena, IL 60448
****************************************************************************
4. What can NOT be posted to the MMID? (By Webmaster Darren O'Neill)
There are certain things that are not allowed on the MMID. You are
responsible for knowing what these are before you post to the list. The
things that are NOT allowed are:
a. Any message asking people to go to another site to vote on a personal
poll of any kind. Since I have absolutely no control over the content of those
sites, I don't want the links to them. We had a problem a while back where
the poll pages people were posting had pornographic material on them.
b. Any message that is considered to be an urban legend, chain letter
or joke. These are strictly forbidden, as they are nothing but junk mail.
These include messages telling people to go to a URL to look at any kind of
such message.
c. Messages that are not related to Martina in the least. I can let
some of the country music related messages go, if they have some relevance
to Martina. If they don't, then post them somewhere else.
d. Any messages that have attachments added to them. These are set
to be filtered off by the majordomo software, so your message won't get
through anyway. If you have a picture, or another type of attachment to
send, mail them to [email protected]
Overall, please ask yourself "will most Martina fans want to read
this" before you send a message off to "[email protected]". Our
goal is to make this a fun, informative place for Martina fans, not a junk
re-mailer. If there are too many problems with messages like these, the
list will be changed to an announce only mode, where you will not be able
to send messages to the list. Please, respect the people getting the
messages you send.
****************************************************************************
5. How do I post something to MMID?
E-mail your message to [email protected]. "MMID" will be automatically inserted at the beginning of the subject line, followed by your subject.
Majordomo will only accept a message from an address that is subscribed to the list, so if you have more than one address, be sure to use the one you used to subscribe.
****************************************************************************
6. How do I unsubscribe?
Send e-mail to
[email protected] (NOT [email protected]).
The subject line is ignored. In the body of the message, put:
unsubscribe mmid
unsubscribe infolist
You can send either command individually or combine them in one message.
Note that the unsubscribe address is NOT the same as for a posting to the list. MMID is automated; sending a message to [email protected] asking to be removed from the list will **NOT** get you unsubscribed. Majordomo will just send a copy of your message to everyone on the list. A message sent to INFOLIST will be rejected.
If you change your e-mail address or if your subscribed e-mail address otherwise becomes invalid for any reason, please unsubscribe that address; bounced mail causes a lot of headaches.
****************************************************************************
7. What if I have a problem or question about INFOLIST or MMID?
Send e-mail to: [email protected] (that's Darren O'Neill) or John Staten ([email protected]) and explain your difficulty.

The Martina McBride Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
****************************************************************************
1. When and where was Martina born?
Martina Mariea Schiff McBride was born July 29, 1966, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Her parents, Jeanne and Daryl Schiff owned a dairy farm outside of nearby Sharon, Kansas (pop. 200) where Martina lived until she graduated from high school. Martina has an older brother, Steve; an older sister, Gina; and a younger brother, Martin (known as Marty), who plays guitar in Martina's band. (Martina and Marty were both born on July 29, but Marty's two years younger -- how's *that* for timing!)
****************************************************************************
2. Is Martina married?
Martina married John McBride on May 15, 1988. John is a world-class concert sound expert, industrial-strength Beatles fan, a Macintosh fanatic and all around great guy. And he has a really wild and crazy sense of humor -- Martina describes it as "warped." If you really want to make his day, collect some good jokes for him.
****************************************************************************
3. Do Martina and John have any children?
They have two daughters. Emma Justine, was born March 29, 1998. Delaney Katharine was born December 22, 1994. John and the girls *always* travel with Martina when she is on the road.
****************************************************************************
4. What is Delaney singing at the end of "Valentine" on Martina's album Evolution?
She's singing "With a broken wing." Martina happened to overhear Delaney singing it one day , so they recorded it. (Delaney is also heard laughing at the beginning of the Wild Angels album.)
****************************************************************************
5. When is John McBride's birthday?
January 15.
****************************************************************************
6. Is it true that John McBride works for Garth Brooks?
Yes. John McBride plays two key roles in Garth's organization: His company, MD Systems/Clair Brothers Audio, is one of the biggest and most successful concert-sound companies in the business, and has provided the sound system for all of Garth's concerts since 1990. John also has worked full-time for Garth since 1991 as Production Manager on Garth's concert tours. In March, 1998, John gave up traveling on the road with Garth's tour to be able to travel full-time with Martina, but he still makes all of the advance arrangements for Garth's concert tours. He still runs MD/Claire and at last count had 28 tours on the road. Look for him at the audio console at Martina's concerts; he mixes house sound to make sure Martina and the band sound great. (Garth Brooks has said that the most important person at a concert is the person mixing the house sound because he determines how everyone on stage sounds to the audience.)
****************************************************************************
7. Did Martina really work for Garth Brooks selling t-shirts and hats?
Yes. When Martina and John moved to Nashville in January, 1990, Martina initially worked as a waitress. But she found herself lonely with John being on the road with Garth's tour, so she got a job working for Garth's merchandise department selling t-shirts, hats, etc. in order to be able to travel with John. She continued with that until she signed with RCA and began working on her first album. Two weeks after the album was released, Martina was back on the road with Garth -- opening the show.
****************************************************************************
8. How did Martina get started in the music business?
Martina's dad fronted a band called The Schiffters, playing local dances in small towns in south-central Kansas on the weekends. Martina began singing with the band at about age seven and later also played keyboard until graduating from high school. After attending one semester of college, she decided to go back to making music full-time, so she moved to Hutchinson, Kansas to sing in the band of some family friends. A year later, she moved to Wichita and sang with several local rock bands. In January of ‘87, Martina was putting together a band of her own and heard about a rehearsal studio for rent, so she called the owner -- a man named John McBride. The band didn't work out very well, but the studio owner *did*; they became engaged four months later.
****************************************************************************
9. What is the "Purple Envelope Story"?
Martina heard through a friend that RCA was looking to add another female artist to their roster. Neither Martina nor John had any contacts at RCA and they knew that record labels don't accept unsolicited material. So they got a big purple envelope and wrote "Requested Material" on it, enclosed a bio, some photos and two demo tapes* that John had produced, and dropped it off at RCA. The "bogus requested-material trick" doesn't usually work, but about three weeks later RCA called and asked her to come in for an interview. Naturally, they were impressed and asked her to do a showcase at a local club to see her perform live. The result was a record deal with RCA-Nashville. Her first album, "The Time Has Come", was released on May 15, 1992 (the McBrides' fourth wedding anniversary). On June 2, 1992 -- in Denver, Co. -- Martina started her first gig as a recording artist opening Garth's concerts.
* (The songs on the demo tapes were: "I Can't Sleep", "Regular As Clockwork", "I Put You Behind Me", "Wild Side Of Life", "When You Leave Me" and "You Win Again.")
****************************************************************************
10. Does Martina write any of her own songs?
Martina has not tried her hand at songwriting (so far). She prefers to use her creative energy to co-produce her albums and leave the songwriting to the people who have a special gift for it.
****************************************************************************
11. Martina has such fabulous blue eyes - does she wear blue-tinted contacts?
Nope, those are Martina's very own blue eyes. She wore glasses from kindergarten until age 16, when she got contacts, but she says they're clear.
****************************************************************************
12. Who does Martina‘s hair and makeup?
Martina's hair stylist is Earl Cox at Trump's Salon in Nashville. Mary Beth Felts of Nashville does her makeup.
****************************************************************************
13. Is Martina left-handed or right-handed?
Martina is left-handed.
****************************************************************************
14. How tall is Martina?
Martina is 5' 4"tall.
****************************************************************************
15. What is Martina's favorite ____________?
For a list of Martina's "favorites", see the Biography page at http://martina-mcbride.com.
****************************************************************************
16. Does Martina have a fan club?
Yes. The Martina McBride Fan Club (MMFC) has over 4,000 members; Liz Beavers is president. The easiest way to get information is to go to the fan club page at Martina's official Web site: http://martina-mcbride.com. If you don't have access to the Web, e-mail your name and address to me at [email protected] and I'll be happy to snailmail you an application and information.
BTW, Liz Beavers's husband, Brett, was Martina's bass player for four years and is currently playing bass in Lee Ann Womack's band. He also wrote "The Great Divide" on Tim McGraw's album All I Want.
****************************************************************************
17. What is Liz Beavers' e-mail address?
Liz can be reached at [email protected].
****************************************************************************
18. How can I meet Martina in person?
The best way to meet Martina is to join her fan club and attend one of her concerts. She meets with fan club members backstage for autographs and pictures after virtually all of her regular concerts except for large fairs and festivals. Fan Club members can attend two meet & greets per year. In order to attend ameet & greet you must contact Liz Beavers via e-mail, fax (MMFC hot line number) or snail mail in advance to be placed on the list for a particular concert. Spaces on the list for each concert are limited and are filled on a first come, first served basis; so get your requests in early.
If you aren't already a member of the fan club, your membership application must be processed (6-8 weeks) before you can be placed on a meet & greet list.
****************************************************************************
19. How can I write to Martina?
You can e-mail Martina care of Liz Beavers at [email protected]. Liz passes on all letters to Martina and Martina does read ALL of them, although she doesn't have time to answer each one. If you belong to MMFC, you can also send a fax to her through the fan club hotline. The snail mail address is P.O. Box 291627, Nashville, Tn 37229-1627. (That's MMFC's address.)
****************************************************************************
20. Did Martina used to be lead singer for McBride And The Ride?
Martina has no connection with the group or lead singer Terry McBride. (If there were a relation, it would be to John McBride -- Martina's maiden name was Schiff.)
****************************************************************************
21. Where can I buy Martina's videos?
Martina has had talks with distributors about a releasing a long-form video which would include the video clips as well as live concert and backstage footage but, as of now, there is nothing available commercially. The only way to get them is to fire up your VCR or get a copy from someone who has already taped them.
****************************************************************************
22. What happens to the mother at the end of "Independence Day"?
The mother could have died in the fire, accidentally or deliberately, or she could have been taken away by the authorities. The songwriter, Gretchen Peters, deliberately left that question unanswered. But the point of the song is to illustrate what can happen when a woman finds herself in a desperate situation as a result of domestic violence and feels she has to take desperate action. Martina wanted to record the song to warn women in abusive or violent relationships to get help or get out before they find themselves in a tragedy like the woman in the song. Martina says her interpretation is that the mother does NOT die and that she couldn't have recorded the song if she felt that the mother dies.
****************************************************************************
23. What happens to the woman at the end of "A Broken Wing"?
This is what Martina had to say in the fan club newsletter: "And if anybody asks, you can tell them that no, she didn't jump out the window!! That thought never crossed my mind until someone asked me that after they had heard the song...to me the song is about this woman's unbreakable spirit, and I always thought she just left, and the window and the curtains were symbolic of her "flying away" and finding her freedom. I talked with the writers and that's definitely what they had in mind when they wrote the song."
****************************************************************************
24. Where can I find Martina's recording of "Valentine" and who is Jim Brickman?
If you don't listen to Adult Contemporary (A/C) radio, you might not be familiar with Jim Brickman. He's a very popular New Age pianist on the Windham Hill label. When he heard Martina's "Wild Angels" album, he realized hers was the perfect voice for a song he and Jack Kugell had written called "Valentine." He contacted Martina and sent her a tape of the song. Martina loved the song and thought it would be interesting to do something a little different. "Valentine" spent two weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary (A/C) charts and even got to #68 on Billboard's Country singles chart although it wasn't released or promoted to country stations. The song initially appeared on Brickman's "Picture This" album (Windham Hill 11211), and is also on Martina's album, "Evolution", as well as the "B" side of the CD single of "A Broken Wing." It was later re-mixed for country and released to country radio by RCA.
A number of people have asked about an instrumental version of "Valentine" for weddings. An instrumental version can be ordered directly from Jim Brickman's office. For more information, call 1-888-274-2562 or e-mail them at [email protected].
****************************************************************************
25. Will Martina be making a TV appearance anytime soon?
Martina makes frequent TV appearances - most often on TNN and CMT. Some other shows she has appeared on are the Tonight Show, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, The View, Good Morning America (five times), The Road, Regis & Kathie Lee (twice), Entertainment Tonight, Crook & Chase, Prime Time Country, General Hospital, and guest-starred on an episode of Baywatch ("Western Exposure")! Her first hosted special, "Full Speed Ahead" (TNN), with guests Garth Brooks, Lee Roy Parnell and Levon Helm, is shown about twice a year on TNN. (It originally aired on 02/20/96.) And Martina has a new limited series on TNN called "Celebrity Homes And Hideaways." She also has a TNN Christmas special (1998), "A Classic Christmas with Martina McBride" that will undoubtedly be show in future years. Check the TV Appearances page at http://martina-mcbride.com and keep an eye on MMID and Liz's MMFC hot line. Martina's appearances on TNN and CMT (including videos) can also be searched through http://www.country.com.
****************************************************************************
26. I've heard Martina is a member of the Grand Ole Opry. What's that?
The legendary Grand Ole Opry, presented live from Nashville each Friday and Saturday night, is the world's longest-running radio program, and it is also an American institution. The Opry began in 1925 as the WSM Barn Dance and is still going strong. The Opry occupies an important place in country music today because of its history and tradition and because it is virtually the only place that regularly brings together all types of music in the country genre. Most country singers starting in the business cite appearing on the Opry as one of their career goals (not to mention becoming a member). You can hear the Opry live from Nashville on WSM-AM at 650Khz every Friday and Saturday night over much of the U.S. and Canada. (Your car radio may be your best bet if you don't have a really good indoor AM radio.) The Saturday 7:30 p.m.--8:00 p.m. (Central) segment is also telecast live on TNN. If you're going to be in Nashville on a Friday or Saturday night, you should plan to attend in person. See the Opry's Web site at http://www.country.com/music/opry/opry-history-f.html
One of the major milestones of Martina's life and career occurred on November 30, 1995, when she was inducted into the Opry as its 72nd regular member during the Opry's 70th Anniversary Special, which was telecast on CBS. Martina chose one of her idols, Loretta Lynn, to make the presentation, and sang Willie Nelson's "Crazy" for the occasion.
****************************************************************************
27. When will Martina be on the Opry again?
Martina appears regularly as her touring schedule permits, but the dates are not usually available very far in advance. Opry members are expected to commit to at least four appearances a year. The Opry's lineup is available on Wednesday or Thursday of each week at http://www.opryonline.com. An announcement is issued through MMID as soon as we learn that Martina will be on.
****************************************************************************
28. When will Martina be performing near where I live?
Martina tours all over the U.S. and Canada and she has also done several European tours. She won't be spending as much time on the road as she has in the past, however, because Delaney started kindergarten this fall and Martina wants her to be able to attend school at home. Martina currently plans to tour primarily during the summer when school is out, with a few shows on weekends and during school vacations. The tour schedule is available at martina-mcbride.com, the Liz Beavers' Fan Club hot line, and is posted to MMID and Infolist on a regular basis.
****************************************************************************
29. Do radio station requests really make a difference?
Yes. Calling stations to request Martina's singles is one of the most important things you can do to support her. The influence of requests varies from station to station; some pay more attention to them than others. Many stations use requests to gauge the listeners' interest in single - especially a new one when a lot of singles are competing for just a few new spots on the playlist. And don't forget to request the videos on TNN and CMT. The videos spur interest in a song, which spreads to radio, and that drives album sales.
****************************************************************************
30. Where can I get the lyrics to Martina's songs?
See the Discography page at martina-mcbride.com. Click on the album, then the song title.
****************************************************************************
31. Where can I get ticket information for Martina's concerts?
Neither martina-mcbride.com nor Liz at the fan club has any details about ticket prices, on-sale dates, etc.for Martina's concerts. If the venue has a contract with Ticketmaster, they will have information at <http://ticketmaster.com>. There may be venue information at http://tickets.com but they also scalp tickets. Otherwise, lookup the venue's phone number in one of the online phone directories and call the venue.
