POST TO DIGEST!

I noticed several folks who wanted to find TWANG magazine when it comes
out w/ Martina's pic. Thanks for the update for me, and, in return, I
have some GREAT news to share (other than the fact that I got the first
wave and handshake from Martina Friday night in Ruston, LA! Haven't
washed my hand since! Probably never will!).

I bought the premier issue of TWANG a few weeks ago b/c it had Brooks
& Dunn on the cover. I found it @ Wal Mart. However, that's no
guarantee that they'll have it again b/c they have different magazines
every time I look.

Here is the address for TWANG if you would like to write them:

TWANG
P.O. Box 4130
Fort Worth, TX 76164-0130

Thought you'd like to know!

Best wishes, buy "Wild Angels" (you won't regret it!), go see Martina
(you'll LOVE it!), & keep requesting "Swingin' Doors."

Ben

Thanks to both Ben and Roger for the info on TWANG magazine. If you still
cannot find it, let me know and I will see if I can't get my hands on a
few copies!

While I was going through my messages looking for things to give to Martina
when I see her, I ran across this post from the Digest that came in months
ago while the Digest was in the just starting up mode. I think that those
of you who hadn't read this will enjoy it!!!

=========================>>>>

Here is a story sent in by Mylan Nolson, Martina's #1 fan from Wisconsin!
I would like to thank Mylan for giving me a lot of advice, as well
as a hand promoting the web site and the Internet Digest. He was lucky
enough to meet Martina and tell her a bit about the fans here on the
Internet... But, here, let him tell you...

GOOD NEWS!!

Before I cover the good news, I want to take this opportunity to PUBLICLY
congratulate Darren O'Neill, the creator of the Official Martina McBride
Home Page for reaching an important milestone: 5,000 "hits" or visits to
the home page from fans all over the world. Good job Darren!! Besides
being an excellent resource for her fans, the home page also serves as a
wonderful way to promote Martina and her music on line. I applaud the fan
club (thanks Liz!) for officially endorsing Darren's home page. We all
appreciate having access to it on the Internet! Darren, myself, and others
truly are "21st century fans". We use modern communications technology to
help promote Martina & her music and best of all, communicate with fans
everywhere on the planet. As I can personally attest to after visiting with
Martina & her support people in Winnipeg, they are VERY supportive of what
we're doing on line. A big "hello" to the guys I spoke with in Winnipeg:
Mark Hively, Jed Downing, Gary Exner, and an especially big HELLO to Chris
"Moose" Finger - hi Chris!).

And now, the good news!

I am looking at a copy of Billboard Magazine. Pop quiz: who has the #1
song on the Billboard Country Singles Chart for the week ending March 2,
1996? Martina McBride, that's who!!

A good samaritan in Nashville sent me this e-mail:

Martina's "Wild Angles" single is definitely #1 as of March 2, 1996. There
was a big
banner hanging on the RCA building in Nashville that read: "RCA, thanks
for making 'Wild Angels' my first #1 single. Love, Martina."

On 2/22/96, TNN News reported the following:

At The Nashville Music Awards ceremony, Martina was awarded best country
album of
the year for Wild Angels. She said "I really am shocked, WOW!" Like the
American
Music Awards, the "Nammys" (what the awards are called) are voted on by the
public.
In this case, the Nashville public. Martina also said, "...it's always
great, it's a real special
feeling when you have the support of the Nashville community. They know
what goes
into making an album and they know what we do, inside and out. To have
their vote of
confidence and their encouragement means a lot to me..."

Martina was also awarded video of the year for "Safe In The Arms Of Love".
(one of my personal favorites too :-)

more news:

In Winnipeg, Martina publically announced that "Phones Are Ringin' All Over
Town" would be the next release from her "Wild Angels" album. In my humble
opinion, that single sounds like another Billboard #1 to me, I guess we'll
have to wait and see :-)

Before you start reading about Martina's Winnipeg concert and the 1,400 mile
round trip my brother and I travelled to get there, just this note: I have
a wonderful photo of Martina & myself, taken backstage in Winnipeg.
Eventually, the photo will be posted on her home page. If you want an
advance peak, just e-mail me at [email protected] and I will e-mail the JPEG
photo to you.

and now, my "Winnipeg experience" - by Mylan Olson -

I (and my brother Nyman) had the recent pleasure of seeing Martina McBride
perform live at the Walker Theatre in Winnipeg, Canada. Jason McCoy opened
(he sounded great!), followed by Martina (absolutely outstanding, of course
:-) and then John Berry (his performance was alone worth the price of
admission).

The highlight of the concert (I think) was when Martina was getting ready to
sing "How Great Thou Art." A few moments into the song, little Delaney
Katharine McBride (her 1 year-old daughter) came out to see what "mommy" was
doing. It was one of those touching moments that had the Winnipeg audience
going ahhhhhhh. :-) She picked Delaney up and TRIED to go on with the song,
but Delaney kept squirming, wanting to leave her mother & explore the Walker
Theatre herself! After a short time, Martina had to stop singing the song
so she could attend to her energetic little daughter. John McBride (her
husband) entered from stage right & picked up Delaney. This allowed Martina
to continue on with her performance. It looked like Delaney and John got a
quick kiss before they exited the stage. After she finished singing "How
Great Thou Art," I had better insight into why Martina is so grateful to God
for all she has. A beautiful, healthy daughter, a loving husband, a
wonderful, fulfilling career - I'm sure all of her fans (myself included)
are very happy for her. Martina truly has been blessed.

Regarding our Winnipeg "experience," I'll just say the trip was beyond even
my wildest expectations! After her performance, Martina did the customary
"meet and greet" with the fan club (the meet & greet is one BIG reason to
join the fan club, if you haven't done so already). I sat down with Martina
and did a brief "show and tell" presentation about her home page. I knew I
wouldn't have a lot of time, so I gave her 5 or 6 color laser prints (screen
shots) from her home page. That way she could review the details of her
home page at her leisure, on those loooong cross-country bus trips. I got
the impression she was genuinely thrilled/curious about the whole concept!

I wished I had more time to chat with her, but she and her "entourage" had
to leave for a long drive to Thunder Bay, Canada (the next concert
location). I also gave Martina and "Moose" (I'll tell you about Moose in a
second) reprints of photos I took of her & the band at a Lake Delton, WI
performance. It was a benefit concert she was kind enough to do for Hope
House, a battered women's' shelter. Even though the photos turned out very
good, I am NOT a professional photographer; I just happened to be in the
FRONT row with a good camera :-) Martina personalized her autograph on an
11X14 photo I took of her. Just before I left (after some negotiation)
someone was kind enough to take a quick shot of Martina & myself with my
camera.

I know Martina already knows this, but the little things she does for her
fans mean so much to them. We wouldn't think any less of her if she didn't
sign the occasional autograph or do the "meet and greets," but isn't it
GREAT that she does! Thank you Martina!!!!!!!!!!!

As an added bonus, my brother and I did something most fans don't bother to
do. We sought out her support people. These "behind-the-scenes" people
work VERY hard to make Martina's concerts look (and run) so smoothly. After
the meet & greet, we went right out to where Martina's merchandise was being
sold. Sitting at the table was a gentleman known as "Moose." A fitting
nickname considering we were in Canada :-) I recognized Moose (Chris
Finger) from previous Martina concerts. After a short time, he recalled
seeing ME on a few occasions too - I wonder where that might have been? :-)
Anyway, we chatted at some length, discussing his responsibilities,
Martina's upcoming European tour, and (of course) the Internet and her home
page. It was nice of Chris (and the others) to take time from their hectic
pace to chat with us.

My brother and I had our pictures taken with Chris and a few others (in the
future, look for the pictures on the home page)! I also talked to and had
pictures taken with: Jed Downing, lighting designer/director - Gary Exner,
lighting / pyrotechnician and Mark Hively, Martina's tour manager. Mark
made quite an impression on me. He seemed to have an intense, type A
personality, lots of energy, and a quick wit. I got the feeling that
Martina is in VERY capable hands! I wish we could have met & talked with
MORE of her support people, but we'll have to save that for her European
tour! (Just kidding, I think? Seeing Martina in Winnipeg was a good
excuse to see Canada for the first time, so maybe it's a good enough excuse
to see Europe for the first time - I'll let you know... :-)

I've had the honor of seeing Martina live on 2 other occasions; in Lake
Delton, WI (a venue that allowed photos to be taken - look for them soon on
her home page), and in Mankato, MN. Both concerts were in November '95. I
was fortunate enough to personally meet Martina for the first time after the
concert in Lake Delton. She (as always) was VERY gracious & autographed the
album cover from her Wild Angels CD (look for that on the home page too).

My brother and I live in southern Wisconsin. The concert was in Winnipeg.
This meant we had a little bit of traveling to do :-)

The concert was Wed night (Feb 7). We left Tuesday morning and almost made
it to the Canadian border by nightfall. I say almost because we were
involved in a traffic accident 2 miles from the border. (Are we true fans or
what? :-)

On Tues. night (6:45pm to be exact) about 1hr outside of Winnipeg at
Pembina, North Dakota, about 2 mi from the Canadian border, it began to
RAIN. Any other time of year this is no big deal, but when you're A)
traveling down an interstate at 70mph B) the month is February C) traffic
seems mysteriously thin for some reason - all these elements come together
and voila! - you're "warped" off the interstate AGAINST YOUR WILL because of
I C E. Ugh...

In short, we ended up in the ditch :-(

When we hit the rain, I began to slow down. I was down to about 60mph when
all the fun began. Losing control of one's vehicle at 60mph is quite the
experience, but I don't recommend you try it :-). As the car slid, it did
one 360 and landed just off the road in the ditch. Thanks to our seat
belts, we escaped without ANY injuries and our car escaped serious damage.
However, there was one casualty...

As we were spinning, I heard some glass shatter. I thought it was my
computer monitor, which was in the back seat. (in case you're wondering, I
just HAD to bring my PC - I wanted to send & receive my e-mail while at our
Winnipeg hotel room and surf the Internet too). The shattered glass turned
out to be our rear-right window instead of the monitor. I was relieved the
monitor was fine, until my brother told me WHAT had shattered the window.
After the car came to a rest, Nyman said "I think I see our computer lying
in the snow, outside my window..." I looked and sure enough, there it was
:-(

For safekeeping against the cold, I had wrapped the PC in garbage bags
earlier in the day - never dreaming it would end up in a snow bank near the
Canadian border. I now wish I'd put a seat belt on my $4,000 PC. Oh well,
I figured I needed to upgrade anyway ;-) The sheriff's deputy reminded me
that it was better to loose the computer than something much more precious:
our lives. He was right...

A number of vehicles met similar fates that night, including a few
18-wheelers. These big trucks can be hazardous to your health if one looses
control anywhere near you. Fortunately, no trucks (or other cars) were
nearby when WE began sliding all over the road.

If we had to crash anywhere, I'm glad it happened where it did; just 1/10th
mile from an exit, close to a gas station (on the US side of the border).
If we had crashed on the Canadian side, things would have been more
complicated because there is very little "civilization" between the border
and Winnipeg.

Everything DID turn out OK, however. Except for the rear window, the car
was fine. A computer can be replaced, but not a person. We were thankful
(to God) for escaping potentially serious injuries as a result of our
unplanned "ride."

I have some happy news to report about our computer, though. After
returning to Wisconsin I plugged everything in, expecting to see smoke
pouring out everywhere. What I saw next truly amazed me - the computer
started right up! In fact, that's the only reason I'm able to communicate
with you right now. If someone told me this story, I'm not sure I'd believe
them. Even though it happened to me, I still find it hard to believe. I
won't tell you who the computer manufacturer is, just look for a magazine ad
in a few months with my sworn endorsement (ha ha).
