Hey Martina, Darren and Fans!

I'm a 33 year old married CPA in Dallas/Fort Worth, managing a regional
accounting and budgeting section of a large federal agency.

Martina may remember me as "The Guy With The Signs" at Billy Bob's in Fort
Worth. Martina should know the color blue on those signs was as close as I
could come to those blue eyes on poster board (I matched then pretty good
people said)! John, you're a lucky man. Me, I'm a lucky fan!

This is just a quick note to say I'd like some mail from other Martina fans.
Also, I'm a recreational mountain biker. SO IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER MOUNTAIN
BIKING FANS OF MARTINA OUT THERE, SOMEONE PLEASE WRITE ME AND TELL ME ABOUT
GOOD TRAILS IN YOUR AREA FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING TRIPS! Maybe we can ride
together and discuss MARTINA!

Hey Darren, what about having Martina send a message to her internet fans!?
Does she have a computer/internet connection? If not, I'd be glad to supply
one for her use next time she's here! Maybe you could pass this on to her
to let her know about her many internet fans.

Bye for now, and Martina/mountain biking fans, send me some mail! And
Martina, I'd LOVE to get a message from ya!

Tread lightly,

Jeff
aka the Wanderer.
(Martina is aware of her fans on the net, but as of
right now does not have an internet connection of her
own. Perhaps we can work out an on-line chat one day,
until then, Martina will continue to receive these
digests
through the fan club. So even though she may not
be able
to respond, she will be able to keep in touch with
what is
                         going on here! -Darren)

From: Mylan Olson <[email protected]>

Hello to all Martina fans, near & far. My name is Mylan Olson.
[email protected]

On Oct 30 I attended the Madison County Music Awards show where Martina was
the featured performer. She won an award for best album of the year; Wild
Angels. The show & concert were awesome! Pictures from the event will be
posted later on the homepage.

However, the next day, Halloween 1996, will be hard to forget! I had so
much fun in Chicago, I got a little carried away, but more about that later.

Chicago was loads of fun! Even though we got caught in rush hour traffic,
we still arrived right on time at 5:00 & left about 12 midnight. In between
was 7 hours that I'll never forget. Not that I'm superstitious, but this
was the 7th time in the past year I saw Martina in concert.

The night began with some great food complements of the IWFF. After that,
Martina granted each one of the VIP's time to chit-chat and pose for
pictures. I thought -I- was going to be asking all the questions. But I was
surprised when Martina & Mark Hively (her tour manager) asked me what time I
finally left the MMFC party in Nashville (held June 96). I told them
5:30AM. This was because I had given Martina a 20 minute
Internet/multimedia demonstration that didn't start until after the party
concluded at 4AM. The key thing here is that Martina had a public appearance
THAT MORNING at 9AM while I just went back to the hotel room & crashed from
exhaustion :-) (more details about Nashville in a future MMID).

Now, back to my Chicago chat with Martina. I presented her with an unusual
gift. It was a movie called Wild Angels!! If you think the title is
interesting, consider this: it was made in 1966 - the same year Martina was
born! Strange coincidence? It was a "B" movie about an outlaw biker gang
starring Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra & Bruce Dern. I took a chance & ordered
the movie for her without having actually seen it myself. Martina herself
had never heard of the movie! For details about the movie, go to
http://sensei.co.uk/films/films/wangels.html

We all took time to chat with Moose, Martina's merchandise guy. It was
during this chat when I accidentally tipped over a bottle of Sam Adams beer.
Fortunately the merchandise was spared a soaking! For those who don't know,
Moose is engaged to be married sometime next Spring. We wish he & Kara all
the best!

The highlight, of course, was Martina's live performance. What a show! Even
after 7 concerts in one year, I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Martina took the stage around 10:30PM.

Martina announced that her next video will be "Cry on the Shoulder of the
Road". It will be directed by the same person that did her Independence Day
video. Also, regarding her current video, "Swingin' Doors", she said it
was taped near her home town of Sharon, Kansas with family, friends, old
class mates and even her grandmother was in attendance (and in the video
too!) Try to catch the video on CMT or TNN. Also, PLEASE take 10 seconds
today and call your local radio station to request "Swingin' Doors".
Martina does so much for her fans & non-profit causes; this is the LEAST we
can do for her.

In addition, the Chicago audience wanted to know where Delaney (Martina's
daughter who will be 2 this December) was. Martina said she had intended to
bring her out, but with the cold, Chicago winds, the poor little girl would
have frozen! Also, I'm sure it was a little past Delaney's bed time anyway
(10:30PM).

Even though Martina's concert was an obvious reason to be there, there were
other important reasons I attended:

The show was benefit for the Illinois Woman's Funding Federation (IWFF). An
organization that supports causes near & dear to Martina's heart, like
domestic violence prevention. My understanding from Lisa at the IWFF is
that Martina originally scheduled Oct 31 as a day off. Apparently, the IWFF
asked Martina a few years ago if she'd do a benefit concert for them.
Unfortunately, because of prior commitments & her hectic schedule, it never
worked out. Well, the IWFF had all but forgotten about it when they got a
surprise call recently from (guess who?).

Martina offered to do the benefit on one of her rare days off from her busy
touring schedule. What a gesture! How many of -us- would use a day off
from work to donate time to some worthy cause? Needless to say, the IWFF
said yes, & the rest is history. (special thanks to Lisa at the IWFF for her
logistical assistance without which I couldn't have attended).

Another reason for attending was the venue. As Darren had stated in an
earlier MMID, Whiskey River was the ideal intimate setting for such an
event! The folks at the IWFF had a VIP section in front of the stage which
put us super close to all the fun. In fact, Darren told me we were so close
he could only take pictures with his zoom lens set to its most minimum
setting - imagine that! We even entertained the thought of moving BACK a
few rows, but decided not to after 3 seconds of careful thought :-)

A great reason for me to attend was to finally meet Darren O'Neill face to
face. I've been in contact with him via e-mail since Dec 1995. E-mail is
great, but still can't take the place of a face to face meeting. Darren & I
covered a lot of ground related to the Web page, including both short & long
term goals for the best fan club page on the Net!

My connection with the homepage has primarily been related to promotional
activities & creative input from time to time. I've tried almost everything
possible to raise awareness of the homepage for Martina and the fans (both
on & off the Net). Judging from the reception in Chicago, it seems to be
working!

I also meet Nate Rothenstein for the first time. He has built a personal
page about Martina that's worth a look at
http://members.gnn.com/CRothenste/index.htm Nate & his brother George
drove to Chicago all the way from Eastern Ohio for this special event.
Thanks for attending!

It was also a pleasure to meet Darren's beautiful wife, Kym. Also, someone
had flown in from Boston, but we never managed to locate this person.

The night was memorable for another reason too. Besides my 35mm camera, I
brought along my 8mm VIDEO camera to capture highlights of the event. This
wasn't a problem until Martina took the stage. For those of you who don't
know, MOST artists & venues prefer you don't videotape the actual
copyrighted performance unless you have prior (usually written) approval.
This seems like a no-brainer to most people. However, I've been under the
mistaken impression that so long as it was for personal, non-public
consumption (i.e. you didn't sell it or display it publicly), there wouldn't
be any problems.

Congress passed a law in 1984 allowing the public to tape ANY copyrighted
material from TV, as long as it was for personal use & wasn't rebroadcast,
sold, copied, etc. Apparently a key distinction is made between capturing
copyrighted events on TV & doing the same in person...

Because of this, I had to leave my video tape with Mark Hively. The moral
of this story, my fellow fans, is to get prior approval from the powers that
be BEFORE you tape any live performance :-) From what Mark told me, such
permission is rarely granted, but it never hurts to ask, right?

On a scale of 1 to 10, her Chicago appearance was a 9.9! It was for a good
cause & was lots of fun!

Believe it or not, Martina & her crew had to take the SAME route as us out
of Chicago & into Wisconsin on the way to Red Wing, MN - so we just followed
their bus - for awhile. Because our "escort" only topped out at 60mph, we
left them behind outside of Chicago. Imagine that - they drove through
Wisconsin & didn't even stop to say hello ;-)

till next time,

Mylan
[email protected]

(We did have a great time at the Whiskey River! Mylan learned a great
lesson about taping performances, DON'T DO IT! It may not seem like a
big problem to a lot of people, but there are quite a few people who
would like to turn a dollar on someone elses work. Mylan Olson, I can
say, is NOT ONE OF THEM. None the less, it is Martina's crews job to
make sure that no one tapes the show. I don't think there were any
hard
feelings on either side. Although, Mylan was a bit embarassed at
all of
the attention he received from Martina's crew after the show! :)
It did make for a memorable evening! -Darren)

Thanks to our two members who submitted! I always consider giving Mylan
his own digest because he writes so much! But between computers flying out of
car windows (see a previous digest) and not his video tapes being confiscated he
does tell some of the best stories I have heard from "the road." Thanks again
Mylan!
