This is no way a memorial piece. Just a reaction poem. How I felt upon hearing the events of VA Tech and the following reports...
National Crisis Across the Nile, wide expanse of muddy green. Not the length, mind you, but the width. The width separates us, for I can still see you— Screaming gunshot climbs over the rooftops; chaos fills the quad. see me, waving across the Nile to you? You are waving back, mute “hellos” ricocheting across flecks of river. Sunlight drips onto us, poured from god to land here, Two desks smash into the chalkboard; windows breaking. bouncing from my eyes to yours, your eyes to mine, across the Nile, hopping over tiny wavelets: a silent connection of vague sparks. Miles northward, we watch Them, safe through the TV screen. I can see you now, just as you are, waving blithely. I can see them too, leaping from the reeds, scimitars poised at your head, heart, and back, Two desks sitting before a chalkboard; sunlight in the windows. reflecting our sunlight with their whetted edges. I am watching them rape you. Now they’ve left you for dead. I forgot my swimming shoes this Over coffee and donuts a few thoughtful words. A letter of concern: morning. Mute tears across the Nile. Thanks for raising our awareness. Your sorrow means a great deal. Sincerely, Us. |

That's really good. This is such a terrible tragedy that has happened. I think that your poem really reflects the way that many are feeling right now.

Thank you. I appreciate that. It's hard. I wish I could do something, but this is the best I got (which is kind of reflected in the peice, I guess). And it's not the type of poem that pulls at your heart strings... I wish I could capture their story in a way that will honor the victims and such, but I'll leave that task to someone better suited to it.
