I am in a little "argument/debate" with a friend of mine on the whole middle finger issue. We got into this deabte when Juan Pablo Montoya, a NASCAR driver, was recently fined for doing it on his in-car camera at Phoenix this past weekend.

I personally think its demoralizing and vulgar... he thinks its just funny. He says he does it a lot to his friends, I say its rude either way you look at it. I don't care who you are or who you're doing it to, its rude.

This is where respect comes into play. People have none these days. Yes, I was a teenager once and had no respect (not saying you teens have no respect, just using it as an "in general") for anyone else.. and yes, I flipped people off every now and then. I grew up though and when I see people do it (regardless of why) I remember why there's no respect for others in this world.

Finger-flipping is not a big deal, really... its just another rude way of basically saying "screw you".

So... whats your opinion on the issue? Please elaborate on your choices if you want.

"It's seen as rude, degrading and vulgar."

You could add 'childish' to the list, too.

It's seen as rude, degrading and vulgar. I never have done it to anyone and do not plan on doing it.

Although my mother accidently did it to me when she was showing me her nail on her middle finger and I laughed...hard.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) I thought it was the California howdy?!! No wonder why people get angry when I do that to them in Cali!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

I think it's very rude, along with cussing. Just pointless and if you're not smart enough to come up with something better than that, I feel sorry for ya!

Honestly, after so many years, I'm surprised that anyone would still take offense to it. When you think about, trying to offend someone by sticking up one single finger in their direction is really just a funny notion. Like, "What, seeing your finger is supposed to make me feel bad?" While I've never done it to another person in a situation like traffic, I've done it to my friends and brothers (and both they to me) in comical ways when we're just goofing around, and nobody takes it seriously.

I've had a few people do it to me while out driving, but like I said, it's hard to get offended just by seeing a finger pointing my way, and I usually just laugh it off. Basically, it doesn't bother me.

It's a part of life like breathing and blinking. IMO

I flip or get flipped while in car most the time, but I usually flip my finger out of view of other motorists. It's the thought that counts. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

All kinds of people use the gesture old, young, ugly, attractive... you name it, they've used it.

I don't see the big deal... its only nasty, vulgar, etc. in our minds. It's just a finger in reality. I like all my fingers, and don't find any of them inappropriate.

Does anyone know the history of "the Middle finger'

Just wondering when holding up that middle finger, rather than any others, was considered to mean something bad. Who "made it up"

Curious,
Dayna

There's nothing really wrong with it, especially among friends.
