It's sad to say it...but these artists are considered "alternative" when actually, they're the country ones... But, who's y'all's favorites??
Mine are most definitely: CHARLIE ROBISON Kelly Willis Bruce Robison Buddy Miller [and Julie] Patty Griffin Old Crow Medicine Show [they're more like folk bluegrass] Jack Ingram [he used to be considered that..before the smash, Wherever You Are] Kacey Musgraves Mark Chesnutt Shooter Jennings |

I started a topic like this on the old board since I was more drawn to the "alternative" artists than I was to the mainstreamers. Not such a big surprise that you of all people started the exact same thing! Here are some of my absolute favorites from this "genre". Cross Canadian Ragweed---EVERY song they put out I like! Great band! Kathleen Edwards--- An absolute favorite of mine. She can't sing worth a hoot but her songs are absolute NAILZ! Her CD "Back To Me" is the only CD in the last two years that has gotten as heavy play as Miranda's 2 CDs. Shooter Jennings--- Not a great singer either but I love his songs and appreciate his attitude which is much like his Dad's. Mindy Smith--- Love her voice and love her songs and her writing. Come to think of it, even the more mainstream country artists I like are out of the norm since none of them have the tired old "ah shucks" attitude or personality. Contrary to popular belief, there is a TON of great music out there. You just have to find it. I for one don't follow what radio plays or what is coming out of AI. I don't even have to look that hard and I find some NAILZ music by current and little known artists. It is like Junior told Bunny in the EPIC Viet Nam war flic "Platoon": "Free your mind and your (butt) will follow." Not a bad theory when it comes to finding great music. |

Mindy Smith
Kelly Willis Among those you mentioned. I like Mark Chesnutt a lot, but I'm old enough to remember when he was mainstream country, so I'm a little surprised to find out that he is now Alt. Same goes for Kelly Willis. Which reminds me that Bruce Robison ought to be on my list somewhere. Also, Catherine Britt. I'd have to say that she and Mindy are among my favorites among the relatively unknown. I liked Allison Moorer A LOT in the early days (1998-2001), but she seems to have self-destructed, same as her sister once did. So much talent wasted. In the store I go to, these artists are called "Americana"!!
Kathleen Edwards is alt? She sounds more Rock to me---love her! Steve Earle is amazing!! Patty Griffin, Mindy Smith, Alison Moorer, Lucinda Williams, Shelby Lynne, Pierces, Linda Ronstadt & Ann Savoy...the store knows I like unusual or off-the-beaten kinda stuff & I've found some interesting & different things... I love Mark Chesnutt! I just discovered him & a guy named Doug Stone, who I never heard of before! I also found a CD by a guy named Michael Mason; I bought it based solely on the cover picture---he's got some sexy eyes & I'm a sucker for deep dimples! Lo & behold, he's got a sexy voice to go with it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) |

Shelby Lynne, It is hard to tag Kethleen Edwards with a specific genre but the only palce I have ever heard or seen her is CMT so they must consider her alternative country. I would consider her rock if not for CMT. Whatever she is, her music is freaking amazing. I've only heard a small sampling of Steve Earle but from what I have heard he'd be on my list too. The 3 or 4 songs I've heard are EPIC especially "Jerusalem" which is flat out EPIIIIIIIC!!!!! I forgot about Shelby Lynne too. Again I have only heard a few of her songs but I was so smitten by her live performance of "Jesus on a Greyhound" on CMT Outlaw's II concert that I named my cat "Shelby". (No lie!) That may have been the single greatest live song I have ever witnessed on TV or live and in person. This post has been edited by TEEEEE!: May 13 2007, 09:06 PM |
