I'll go with the majority, & would still go with my answer, regardless! I am FAR from perfect, but I've NEVER done it, nor have I ever uttered the "F word"...just can't bring myself to doing it...it's so unecessary. There's other "cleaner" ways to express anger...go pound sand!!

IMO It is so trashy and redneck. I would like to think I had a little bit of class and would not degrade myself to such childish and immature behaviors.

It's rude. I am probably more likely to say the actual phrase than flip someone off (although even then, I can't ever remember myself saying it...).

For all of you who think it is no big deal: The next time you are driving and get passed by a pack of Hell's Angels, just go right ahead and flip that bird at them. You'll see how harmless it is. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

I see it as rude, degrading and vulgar, along with cussing.

I'm not saying people don't get offend by it. I'm just saying I don't understand why people get offended by it. How did the whole offensive angle about it even get started in the first place. I mean, it's just a finger. You don't get offended when someone sticks their tongue out at you, so why should a finger make all the difference? Not directing this towards you specifically; it's more of just an observation.

As for swearing, I've never really cussed someone out, but I have been known to swear in moments of anger or frustration, whether in private or with friends, but never in public like some people. It can actually be a good stress reliever. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I say it is rude, but feel that as society we get worked up and overrate things.

I don't do it. It's rude and I was raised not to swear or 'flip the bird'.

Well, why do people get offended by the "s-word" or the "f-word" or being called the "b-word"? It's all about respect. People have used the middle finger as a form of vulgarity... much like the words above. I don't know how it came about, but I would say 99% of the people would say its a form of saying "screw you".

Laura,

I like the Jason Aldean song "Johnny Cash" and am glad the stations around here play the un-edited version containing "screw" in the lyrics.

He's the only member of Muzik Mafia I am a fan of. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

Ok, maybe he's not a member of MM after all. I didn't even know he was a ACM New Male Vocalist winner.

Daniel

You could add 'childish' to the list, too.

I wouldn't say it's not a big deal, but I have done it to my friends, very seldomly...but it does happen from time to time, and vice versa. Purely, just kidding.

I've never flipped anyone off, and have never been flipped off [for actual intentions]....it's just not something that happens a lot where i'm from. [you may think thats an ignorant statement, but it's true]

It's rude, but I do it anyway lol. I don't do that often, though, and it's usually only done as a joke towards a friend.

I think it's just plain rude and childish. But here's an interesting view of how it originated that I found.....

"Giving the Finger

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the Renowned English longbow and therefore be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew").

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew! "PLUCK YEW!"

Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the ne-finger-salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter. It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird."

And yew thought yew knew everything."

Interesting thought...... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

I think that it is rude most of the time. But if you are just hanging arround with your firends in your homes by your selves and you are just kidding arround. If your just doing it in your own home not meaning anything by it then it is fine. If you are in public fliping people off trying to make them mad, then it is rude and you shouldn't do it. That is just my opinion.

In our society, it isn't exactly meant as a compliment. I never do (unless I am REALLY mad at someone... but I would never do it to someone's face... then again I live in Massachusetts and I haven't started driving quite yet! There's always time!)
